Hay Hay Hay!

Whilst the small bale hay harvest nears completion for 2020 here at Venn Farm; and we move into delivery and collection mode we really do have to thank a number of people who have made it possible: Brian, Liz, Grace, Sara, Andrzej, Riley, Connor, Dylan, Scarlett, Paris, Ethan, Ben, Wurzel and Kevin. Without your help, support and labour, whether physical, mechanical or via WhatsApp, you helped us bring it in, thank you. You are the true spirit of Venn Farm and everything we stand for and yes Connor, you can have a reference!

Make Hay Whilst The Sun Shines

Whoever said that clearly didn’t live in Britain. We’re making hay in the gaps between the rain and the deliveries to our customers. However we definitely mustn’t grumble as we have had a bumper crop this year of really beautiful small bale hay.

We’re often asked why we make small bales and not big round ones, for us the answer is simple, it’s better for the customer. We are the customer as much as our paying customers. We feed Venn Farm small bale hay to our broodmares, foals and competition ponies and there’s nothing like it. It’s convenient to store, carry and use. It can be taken away to competitions easily, without the need to move to Haylage and fits in w wheelbarrow.

When it comes to Venn Farm hay, the customer is king and our customers would be unhappy is if wasn’t small bale at its best.

Congratulations And Celebrations

Here at Venn Farm we were wondering if the ponies were ever going to go to a show in 2020. This post goes to show that they did and to the wonderfully run Oakland’s Show they travelled.

First up was our 2021 ridden prospect Clonageera Just In Time. Pickle as he’s known at home was away from said home for the first time and although a little unsettled in the Youngstock class, picking up a third, he went on to relax and enjoy himself to win the Part Bred Arabs. Pickle has that typical wonderful Cusop Dimension temperament, and was super laid back for the rest of the day.

Next up was Hilin Hynod, who picked up two wins, including First Ridden and then went on to take Reserve Reserve Ridden Champion. This is his young jockey’s first year off the lead and he did a wonderful job looking after her.

As well as being fed TopSpec Horse Feeds and groomed with Supreme Products, the ponies are fed our own Venn Farm small bale hay to keep their constitution tip top.

A L’Orange

Venn Farm neighbour and friend “Dave the Duck”, has dropped off this year’s ducks for the shooting season. Dave runs several drives across Devon including two here at Venn Farm. This is beneficial to us because he manages several of the water ways but also because there’s always duck at Christmas.

It’s Not All Work, Work, Work!

After last week’s post there was some concern that we don’t let Grace stop… we do and here’s the proof. A Mini Magnum for lunch!

Whilst that might not be the most nutritious meal on the planet, our small bale hay isn’t far off… if you’re a horse! We mix Rye, Meadow and Timothy grasses to produce that unique soft, palatable, long burning fuel they need. Tractor Ted!

Earlier this year Grace earned the nickname “Crash Bandicoot” from her godfather Dom, after quite literally hitting the side of a barn, with her father’s much beloved Hilux.
Not anymore, “Tractor Ted“ as she is now called has been a lynchpin in this year’s hay harvest and has spent tireless hours out in the field cutting, tedding and rowing up.
“As I’ve got older I’ve realised how important the quality of our small bale hay is.” she said “I have friends that I compete with that struggle to get the quality mix we achieve here and also the customer service from their supplier. It’s really good to know that we fill an ever increasing gap in the market and that we aren’t killing the planet to do it.”

Orders are being taken for hay now so drop us a line at mail@venn.farm or give us a ring on 07593 995 278.

Wheat! Buckwheat!

This year’s summer Keets are upon us. They’re all spoken for this season and will be off to their new homes in a couple of months as fully formed Guinea Fowl but in the meantime, let’s just enjoy looking at their fuzzy cuteness.

To order your “confusion” of Keets from the Autumn hatch, drop us a line at mail@venn.farm or give us a ring on 07593 995 278.

Responsible Harvesting

Small bale hay for the discerning equestrian market is the cornerstone of what we produce here at Venn Farm, however we always remember our little friends. The outer two metres of our fields are not harvested, meaning that our resident Dormouse population is protected and this year’s bumper crop of butterflies encouraged.

Have you seen an increase in butterflies where you live? We’d love to hear how you’re encouraging them.

We Continue

The team at Venn Farm continue to work on this year’s small bale hay harvest; picking our way through some very peculiar but very British summer weather. So far we’ve cut and baled the Solar and Oak fields and have also appreciated the help of Grace and her friends, Scarlett, Paris, Connor, Dylan, Ethan and Riley to get these two huge fields cut, baled and barned.

Orders are already being taken for hay so drop us a line at mail@venn.farm or give us a ring on 07593 995 278.

Grass Today Hay Tomorrow

Well not quite but almost! Haymaking season is upon us at Venn Farm and that can only mean one thing, late nights, early starts and unbelievably hot dry dry weather… no overcrowded Bournemouth Beach for the Venn Farm team.

The cut is underway here and its going really well as planned. We’ve got a great breeze coming in from the West and a few more days of dry weather for tedding and baling on the forecast. We really do become a mini Met Office at this time of year.
